Bugger.

[ A pause because, oh, yes, that would be the button that turns the blasted thing on. Well... we can only hope that there is a delay between Yusuf's annoyed mouthing off at the little piece of technology and it actually turning on. He's holding it much too close to his mouth and, as such, his voice is unaccountably loud for the calm way he asks, ]

If anyone can hear me, would you be so kind as to let me know?

[ The sound of the device being turned over and over in his hands. Hopefully he won't accidentally click it off... ]

Honestly... this is hardly intuitive...

[ ooc: new, fresh meat, etc. not cursed, just confused! ]

Oh.

Bugger.

...Oh!

Well. Horrid first impression. [ A pause, Yusuf looking around as if he might see speakerphones blaring his apologies to the world. But, no. It's just him and his little silver... device. ] I suppose I could turn it off... if I could find that button.

[Laughing, now.]

It's fine. You don't have things that look like that in your world?

[ Good to know it isn't a total inconvenience; at least she's laughing! ]

Most everyone has a mobile, even in Mombasa, but these are... decidedly different. I have certainly never made the mistake of dialing everyone all at once-- even those annoying bum-dials are only ever to a specific person. Do they do this broadcasting... thing, all the time?

[... half of that didn't quite make sense to her, but. Okay. Moving on.]

Sometimes. I mean, like I said, they have the tendency to turn on when you least expect it but you can choose to put stuff up, too. I don't have anything like this in my world so I had to learn, but once you've sussed out the basics, they're not too bad.

Where's Mombasa, then?

I am sure they are quite nice, but I do not think I will be doing much sussing. I really must be getting back to my pharmacy. [ Yusuf doesn't exactly spend much time around young people, or people who aren't lost in their own worlds, for that matter, so he isn't sure that "my world" isn't some new slang he's yet to acclimate to. ] I'm sorry, where are you from that you don't have a mobile?

[ It is very difficult to keep the sentiment (kids these days...) from seeping into his voice. ]

Mombasa is in Kenya...

Oh, brilliant. I've never been. I did visit Egypt once, though, with my family. As for where I'm from, that'll obviously be England, but I don't think that'll answer your question.

[Pause. She isn't about to admit she's magical, of course, not to a complete stranger. But she can't help but wonder...]

Hasn't anyone explained the City to you yet?

Egypt is a beautiful place, though I assume you mean Giza. Few people decide to holiday in the Sahara just for the fun of it. Hopefully you all managed to make it to Alexandria. [ Blinking at the device, Yusuf shakes his head. ] England will do. I am a bit of an ex-pat so I wouldn't recognize a province if you named one.

It would seem I am woefully out of the loop. [ Thank you bastard teammates and your brutish sense of humor. ]

No? Not even Devon? Bloody huge place, Devon.

[She pauses again, thoughtful and considering.]

And, well. I reckon I can try and answer some questions if you've got any. I've been here long enough that I ought to know most things by now, yeah? Go ahead.
